Administrative region |
Each of the 21 administrative districts by which Italy is composed of (19 regions and 2 autonomous provinces). |
Broadleaved forest |
Forests with a predominance (more than 75 percent of tree crown cover) of trees of broadleaved species. |
Canopy cover |
the percentage of the ground covered by the vertical projection of the plant canopies. This measure can be divided into tree canopy cover and shrub canopy cover |
Coniferous forest |
Forest with a predominance (more than 75 percent of tree crown cover) of trees of coniferous species |
Forest |
Land covered by one of the inventory category: 1 - Tall tree forest; 2 - Plantations for timber/wood production or 3 - Temporarily unstocked area |
Forest type |
Each of the 25 listed classes by which the forest tree vegetation is described under the criterion of species frequency |
Inventory category |
Each of the seven broad classes by which vegetation is at first classified (1 - Tall trees forest; 2 – Short trees forest; 3 – Scrubland; 4 – Sparse forest; 5 - Shrubs; 6 - Plantations for timber production; 7 - Temporarily unstocked areas) |
Inventory macro-category |
The closed set of two or more inventory categories. The three inventory categories Tall trees forest, Plantations for timber/wood production and Temporarily unstocked areas form the macro-category Forest (sensu FAO and INFC); The four inventory categories Sparse forest, Short trees forest, Scrubland and Shrubs form the macro-category Other Wooded Land as defined by FAO and INFC. |
Mixed forest |
Forest in which neither coniferous nor broadleaved account for more than 75 percent of the tree crown cover. |
Other wooded land |
Land covered by one of the inventory category: Sparse forest, Short trees forest, Scrubland and Shrubs. |
Plantation for timber/wood production |
Forest stands of more than 0.5 ha established by planting and/or seeding and generally characterised by regular spacing; by one or few species, often alien; and by intensive management. It includes short rotation forestry system and also stands for pulp production. In case of linear formation a width of more than 20 m is required. |
Scrubland |
Land with tree crown cover (or equivalent stocking level) of more than 10 percent and area of more than 0.5 ha. The trees should not be able to reach a maximum height of 2 m at maturity in situ. In case of linear formation a width of more than 20 m is required. Excludes: Land predominantly used for agricultural practices. The term specifically excludes stands of trees established primarily for agricultural production, for example fruit tree plantations. It also excludes trees planted in agroforestry systems. It does not include land that is predominantly under agricultural or urban land use.
|
Short trees forest |
Land with tree crown cover (or equivalent stocking level) of more than 10 percent and area of more than 0.5 ha. The trees should be able to reach a minimum height of 2 m but not exceeding 5 m at maturity in situ. May consist either of closed forest formations where trees of various storeys and undergrowth cover a high proportion of the ground; or open forest formations with a continuous vegetation cover in which tree crown cover exceeds 10 percent.
|
Shrubs |
Land with shrub vegetation cover of more than 10 percent and area of more than 0.5 ha. The shrubs should be able to reach a minimum height of 0.5 m at maturity in situ. The distinction between shrub and tree species is according to the national list provided in the INFC field manuals. If present, tree species canopy cover should not exceed 5 percent. In case of linear formation a width of more than 20 m is required. Excludes: Land predominantly used for agricultural practices or agroforestry systems It does not include land that is predominantly under agricultural or urban land use.
|
Sparse forest |
Land with tree crown cover (or equivalent stocking level) between 5 and 10 percent and area of more than 0.5 ha. The trees should be able to reach a minimum height of 5 m at maturity in situ.
|
Tall trees forest |
Land with tree crown cover (or equivalent stocking level) of more than 10 percent and area of more than 0.5 ha. The trees should be able to reach a minimum height of 5 m at maturity in situ. May consist either of closed forest formations where trees of various storeys and undergrowth cover a high proportion of the ground; or open forest formations with a continuous vegetation cover in which tree crown cover exceeds 10 percent. In case of linear formation a width of more than 20 m is required. Tall trees forest areas also includes: forest nurseries and seed orchards that constitute an integral part of the forest; forest roads, cleared tracts, firebreaks and other small open areas; forest in national parks, nature reserves and other protected areas such as those of specific scientific, historical, cultural or spiritual interest; windbreaks and shelterbelts of trees with an area of more than 0.5 ha and width of more than 20 m; plantations primarily used for forestry purposes, including rubberwood plantations and cork oak stands. Excludes: Land predominantly used for agricultural practices. The term specifically excludes stands of trees established primarily for agricultural production, for example fruit tree plantations. It also excludes trees planted in agroforestry systems. It does not include land that is predominantly under agricultural or urban land use.
|
Temporarily unstocked area |
Land of more than 0.5 ha with young natural stands or plantations established for forestry purposes which have yet to reach a crown density of 10 percent or tree height of 5 m, as are areas normally forming part of the forest area which are temporarily unstocked as a result of human intervention or natural causes but which are expected to revert to tall trees forest.
