The first Italian national forest inventory was carried out between 1983 and 1986 and the results, published in 1988, refer to year 1985. By the end of the 1990s the information provided by the first forest inventory appeared to be dated and insufficient to meet the requirements resulting from the ongoing international processes. Therefore, in 1999, a feasibility study for a second inventory was funded by the Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, and carried out by the Forest Monitoring and Planning Unit of the Agriculture Research Council (CRA-MPF) (ISAFA, 1999).
The study highlighted the information needs, analysed technical details for the feasibility of a new forest inventory, and also the costs and timelines. Being a source of knowledge for carbon stored in forests, the second Italian national forest inventory has been named “National Inventory of Forests and forest Carbon pools” whose acronym is INFC. It assesses and monitors forest area and forestry activities within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions. The new inventory was designed to collect information for sustainable forest management criteria and indicators as developed by the 2003 Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE), INFC is coordinated and carried out by the National Forest Service (NFS) under the scientific and technical support of CRA-MPF that took care of the planning, the crews training, the data quality, the data processing and the publication of the results.
