Statistics are shown at the national level and at the level of the twenty-one administrative districts.
The total wooded area has been classified according to a four-level hierarchic scheme.
The first level is constituted by the two inventory macro-categories “Forest” and “Other Wooded Land” as defined by FAO (FRA2000). These two macro-categories form the Total Wooded Area.
The second level consists of inventory categories. Forest includes Natural and Semi-natural Forests, Plantations and Temporarily unstocked areas. Other Wooded Land includes Low forests, Sparse forests, Scrublands and Shrubs, but also “Inaccessible or not classified OWL”, a category conventionally added to solve practical problems. This category includes all sampling points attributed to the wooded area in the first phase and not furthermore classified because inaccessible and not classifiable from a distance or lacking reliable information due to technical or procedural limits.
At the third classification level, wooded areas were classified according to 23 forest types based on the prevailing specie or species group.
At the lowest classification level, wooded areas were classified according to over 90 forest subtypes based also on bio-geographic and site condition features.
Tables are taken from the report “Stime di superficie 2005” (“Area estimates 2005”, only available in Italian).
