Introduction

The second Italian national forest inventory adopted a three-phase sampling design for stratification. The first two phases allowed to estimate the forest area and its partition into inventory categories and forest types, generically called “strata”. The third phase provided quantitative information on dendrometric parameters, such as growing stock, deadwood, annual increment, regeneration and shrubs for each strata.
Area estimates derive from the first-phase photo interpretation and the second-phase field surveys. The photo interpretation was carried out during 2003. Field surveys were carried out between July 2004 and December 2005 in order to detail the first-phase assessment. The year of reference for area estimates is 2005. The third-phase survey was carried out during the vegetative season 2006 but by convention also estimates of quantitative attributes formally refer to year 2005.
All results are displayed as tables with values by forest type and administrative region. The estimates uncertainty is shown in terms of percent standard error (SE%).
