The first Italian national forest inventory was carried out between 1983 and 1986 and the results, published in 1988, refers to year 1985. By the end of the 1990s the information provided by the first forest inventory appeared to be dated and insufficient to meet the information requirements resulting from international processes. Therefore, in 1999, a feasibility study for a second inventory was funded by Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, and carried out by the Forest Monitoring and Planning Unit of the Agriculture Research Council (CRA-MPF) (ISAFA, 1999).
The study resumed the information needs, analysed technical details for the feasibility of a new forest inventory, and also the costs and timelines. The second Italian national forest inventory has been named “National Inventory of Forests and forest Carbon pools” whose acronym is INFC. The new inventory was designed to collect information for sustainable forest management criteria and indicators as developed by the 2003 Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE). Moreover the forest inventory had to assess and monitor forest area and forestry activities within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions. INFC is coordinated and carried out by the National Forest Service (NFS). CRA-MPF is responsible for the planning, the scientific and technical support, the staff training, the data processing and the results presentation.
